To update a plugin, the most important thing to know is that you have an update available and it is not practically possible to monitor websites on daily basis, especially when we are using a lot of them. To solve this problem, you can use a Update Notifier plugin

This plugin will send you a notification in the dashboard When new version is available for any plugin.

All you have to do is visit your “updates” section of WordPress site.

You can update your plugins in several ways. Below are the different ways to update your WordPress plugins.

1. One click WordPress update

With one click update, go to the updates section of your administration panel at {YOUR SITE URL}/wp-admin/update-core.php. If you have entire core, all the plugins and theme updated, it looks something like this

If you have any updates, following is what your backend looks like.

To update your plugins, select them and click on “update plugins” button.

2. Automatic WordPress update

Automatic update is very practical and if you love to get your plugins, theme automatically updated, then you will be happy to know that WordPress can automatically update your plugins. However, Automatic Updates are turned off by default. You will have to turn them on by adding few lines of code to your functions.php file. You can check out a detailed article about this at How To Turn On Automatic Updates in WordPress.

Automatic updates sound interesting. But, if you are using custom code in your plugin or you have a customized wordpress plugin, then this option is not recommended. If you wish to know about how to not lose your customizations, check our article at How To Update Your WordPress Plugin Without Losing Customization. This will help you in keeping your customization intact while updating your plugin.

3. Manual WordPress update

In some cases, you don’t have any option to update your plugins. So you have to go for manual update option for plugin.

For manual update, download a new version of a plugin from WordPress.org or on its official web pages.

Most of the times, you will get an archive so deactivate the plugin to prevent bugs.If your WP plugin is a single file, then replace it directly to new version but most of the times, plugins are stored under folder and in such cases, upload the content of the new version into the old folder, overwriting the existing files. At the end, reactivate the plugin.

How to manage Bulk updates of WordPress plugins?

If your site has several plugin updates, you need to visit the plugin page and click on the “Update Available” link. The link is accessible at {YOUR SITE URL}/wp-admin/plugins.php?plugin_status=upgrade This link will show the list of all plugins that have an update available. For bulk update, select all of them and then select “Update” from the ‘Bulk actions’ drop down menu.
